Developing a translator’s professional skills requires not only linguistic knowledge but also the cultivation of artistic thinking and literary taste. To foster this, a three-month course on literary text was held with writer and translator Ani Pashayan.
The course was structured to help participants approach literary works not only as readers but also as translators. Texts from classical and contemporary authors were discussed, and a range of literary styles analyzed. Participants learned to recognize an author’s unique style, understand text structure, and explore ways to preserve these features in translation.
Each session combined theoretical and practical components. Lectures focused on text composition, stylistic features, and the role of character voices, while discussions allowed participants to analyze texts, express opinions, and develop critical thinking.
Special attention was given to the richness of literary language. Translators were trained to identify nuances, evaluate the impact of word choice on tone, and maintain the artistic value of the original text in translation. Through practical tasks, members of the Translation School practiced translating prose, poetry, and journalistic texts.
